I have to admit that when it comes to shedding unwanted excess flab, those that diet sensibly and exercise regularly will always win my vote over those that choose to cheat by whatever other methods are available.

So what gets my back up is not that Cherie Blair has managed to lose a sackful of weight or that she wants to maintain her weight loss with swimming.

But surely as normal people are feeling the effects of the credit crunch and financial chaos, Cherie and Tony Blair could have been more discreet when choosing to install a new state of the art exercise pool at their mansion this week.

Thirty thousand pounds may well be a bargain for the Blair’s latest toy, but for most of the country will be seen as an extravagance in the economic climate. Surely she could join a gym like the rest of us.
